The Club was founded on 6th May 1903 to inform members about how to ski, where to ski and what sort of equipment to use. By 1904 it started tests which members could take and in 1905 it started distributing The Year Book of the Ski Club of Great Britain to its members. That year it also organised an expedition for members to the Jotunheim in Norway.
In 1920 the annual was changed to 'The British Ski Year Book', which was edited by Arnold Lunn until 1971 and is a useful historical record of international skiing and the development of ski tourism. In 1972 it became a magazine, now caled “Ski and Board” which appears four times a year and is available on bookstalls as well as going free to members.

From 1926 the Club has sent representatives to mountain resorts to help them make the most of their holidays.

In 1932 Gerald Seligman started a series of articles in the British Ski Year Book on the structure and metamorphosis of the snowflake. This became the basis of avalanche research worldwide.
By 1964 the costs of organising ski racing were too great for a members club which could not apply for government funds. So the Ski Club handed responsibility for racing to a national ski federation, (now known as Snowsports UK) which runs the British ski team and the British national championships, while the Club concentrates on holiday skiing.
