It Worked!
The first ever Saas-Fee Ride (www.verbierride.com/saas-fee-ride.html) took place on Saturday and went off as a great success! Considering that it was one of the hottest and driest June's in over 150 years the resorts incredible summer skiing glacier held up well and was in great condition. The summer freeski event was a competitive showcase for both professional riders and up and coming young rippers.

Skier Cross
The competition kicked off with Skier Cross, an adrenaline fuelled, full contact race where four skiers compete against each other in a specially designed course. The racecourse is packed with slalom turns, raised 1/4 pipe banked turns, rollers, moguls and tabletops. It is the ultimate head-to-head alpine competition. The early start seemed to bring the best out of the riders as they threw themselves into the battle to cross the finish line first at any cost.

After time trials and two tense semi finals the Mens Event was finally won by FIS Europa Cup champion Mathieu Feraud (Volkl, Scott) of France with Thomas Duerr of Liechtenstein in second place. A double fall on the first bend left third place up for grabs, Mark Meeson of England recovered the quickest to take the final place on the podium. The women’s race was won by Shula Wolfenden (UK) with Lorna Carmichael (UK) taking second - a fantastic result for them both especially considering it was their first ever skier cross!

The Skier Cross provided thrills and spills, skill and excitement from start to finish and showed just why this new evolution of skiing means business and is here to stay. The resort of Saas Fee must take much of the credit for the success of the Skier Cross, whilst other summer ski areas were struggling for snow and closing early after the hottest June on record Saas Fee were able to build and maintain an awesome course. Skier Cross winner Mathieu Feraud, who has competed on some of the best Skier Cross courses in the world in the FIS World Cup and Europa Cup events, could hardly believe the quality of the course. So impressed was Mathieu with the course that he is going to spend the summer in Saas Fee training for the coming winter when he will be competing at the top table of world Skier Cross.

Big Air
Off a big air specially built for the competition, the riders pushed each other hard to land the biggest and wildest jumps. Visually, this was an awe-inspiring event, showcasing the skill, courage and creativity of modern skiers. The crowd were treated to 900° twists, multiple back flips, front flips, off-axis rotations, spectacular somersaults and grabs, otherwise known to the core audience as Rodeos, Corks, Mistys, Lincolns and flat spins.

The standard was incredibly high with leading British and European riders taking part. Such was the quality of the riding first place was tied, Tom Last’s (Line Skis, Nike, Siver Cartel, Optic Nerve) Rodeo 720 Grab was matched all the way by Markus Kaiser and his Rodeo 540 Tail Grab. Verbier based Glen Parsons (K2, Siemens, Whitestuff, Smith, Level) took second place on the podium with two awesome corked jumps. Glen threw a Cork 720 Safety Grab for his first jump but up'd the stakes with his second as he stomped a Cork 900 with Safety Grab. Andy Bennett (Line Skis, The North Face, Siver Cartel) came in third with a super smooth 720 Safety Grab. The Girls showed they were not to be outdone by the boys as they took huge air off the kicker. The competition was won by up and coming Swiss Rider Virgine Faivre landing a near perfect Straight Air Safety. British rider Sarah Muson took second place.

Popcorn Bar - After Party
After a hard day’s riding with bodies being pushed to the limit everyone had the chance to kick back and relax at the after-event party in the Popcorn Bar, Saas Fee’s most kicking and lively venue. The action in the bar was almost as sick as the jibbing in the park earlier in the day. The party was also an opportunity for everyone to show their appreciation to the Hotel Dom (www.uniquedom.com) and the Popcorn Bar who were great sponsors and instrumental in the organisation of the event.


A Great Success
All in all, the Saas-Fee Ride 2003 was a great success. Freeskiers from around Europe gathered to showcase the sport and judging from the noise of the crowds, their efforts were much appreciated. With Warren Smith and Guido Perrini chronicling the event both for TV broadcast and their forthcoming movie, 'Snows in the House 2', there will be ample opportunity for people to catch up with any action they missed over the next few months.

Freeskiing may not be all about competition, but competition is an integral part of freeskiing. Such a progressive sport needs events, not only for the media coverage they generate, but also because the fusion of riding talents in the theatre of competition generates an intensity and inspiration capable of pushing the sport to the next level. Riders fed off the energy of this events for sure and hopefully took the vibe back to their home playgrounds.

Buen contest el que han montado en Saas Fee en pleno verano, algo había leído. Los organizadores son los mismos que hacen el Verbier Ride y es muy British, practicamente no participan franceses, austriacos, alemanes...aunque "chapeau" por haber montado un skiercross en condiciones.

correcto, lo monta Warren Smith, un monitor esqui que emigro a los alpes a montar una escuela. COmo dices son los mismos que los del Verbier Ride, incluso comparten muchos sponsors.

la verdad que tiene merito montar un skicross en esta epoca. Imagino lo poco que deslizarian los esquis en el chapapote de julio o el trabajo con las ceras. pero bueno, en el fondo envidia por no poder esatr alli.

como llevas los preparativos del viaje? encontraste la bolsa para los PR?

yo este fin de semana subo a cerler a hacer algo de montaña y descansar de la ciudad. Si necesitas algo del valle ya sabes, con toda confianza.

si es q españa sigue estando a tomar por culo del resto de europa, lo digo por todo y no solo por la poco nieve y cero glaciares q tenemos, asi q eso de montar algo parecido lo veo chungo.

oye manu ya q vas por benasque mira a ver si ves alguna bolsa baratita para 2 pares de esquis de 178, y q no me sobre mucha bolsa porq es para llevarlos dentro del coche (ya se q esta prohibido) y tienen q abultar lo menos posible.

Perdonar mi ignaracia, pero esta prohibido llevar los esquis dentro del coche??? por que??desde cuando?? que medida tienen que tener los esquis como maximo para llevarlos dentro del coche??? los snowblade cuantan como esquis?? y las tablas de snow??

Espero que me podais aclarar por lo menos alguna cuestion....

pues si tia, esta prohibido porq normalmente los llevas desde atras hasta el hueco de los asientos delanteros y suelen acabar en la palanca de cambios, lo cual si tienes algun movimiento brusco pueden presionar la palanca y ostiarte, y tambien porq en caso de frenazo brusco las tablas salen por la luna delantera.

a mi la verdad nunca he tenido ningun problema pero el año pasado en el puerto de cerler vi como paraban a todos los q llevaban las tablas dentro.

yo te hablo desde el punto de vista del palillero, no desde los tableros ni snowbladeros, supongo q los snowblades no pasa nada porq con lo peques q son los puedes guardar bien en el maletero...

pd: manu, he visto la web snowodissey y ya sabes q los videoclpis me molan mogollon, tu tienes alguna peli de esqui?? me la podias dejar para copiarmela??mas q nada por pasar el verano.

La Guardia Civil de vez en cuando y en algunos sitios se pone morada con las multas... por ejemplo en la carretera de Benasque a Cerler. A mi no me ha tocado, pero suelo llevar siempre que puedo los esquis dentro del coche y me informé al respecto.

El reglamento de circulación indica en el artículo 10 que "Los vehículos autorizados a transportar simultaneamente personas y carga deberan estar provistos de una protección adecuada a la carga que transporten, de manera que no estorbe a los ocupantes ni pueda dañarlos en el caso de ser proyectada..." la infracción tiene consideración de grave.

El artículo 14 indica que la carga debe estar sujeta de manera que no pueda "arrastrar, caer total o parcialmente ni desplazarse de manera peligrosa"

La policia interpreta que unos esquis sueltos dentro del coche incumplen ambos artículos, lo que sin duda se les puede rebatir si:
- Los esquis están atados o sujetos de manera que no se pueden mover.
- Los esquis están en una bolsa.
- No hay gente compartiendo asiento con los esquis.
- El policia en cuestion está de buen humor.

Así que cuidadín, que además es una falta grave!

Pues estoy ya con los ultimos detalles y gracias a Antonio de Dakine y Narcís de Radicalsnowboard he conseguido una enorme bolsa con ruedas para skis y snowboard.

bien !! bueno ya tienes para meter los PR en el avion......yo ya te dije subo para cerler esta tarde a ver si desconecto un poco y echo un ojo a la carretera del ampriu y demas.

Por interés profesional y también por saber a que atenerme (es decir si va a durar o no) que están haciendo en la carretera del Ampriu:
- Parcheo?
- Refuerzo? (Le están poniendo un firme nuevo dejando el que había)
- Han levantado el firme y lo están reconstruyendo?(excavación de unos 50 cm)
- Están cambiando el trazado?

Esa carretera tenía además muy mal drenaje, es decir el agua se metía por debajo del pavimento y se hinchaba y lo destruía (que es lo mismo que le pasa a la carretera de Cerler, por cierto).

te contare, pero me han comentado que estan cambiando el trazado de algunas curvas. de todas dormas.......pienso que una carretera expuesta a las inclemencias meteorologicas es complicado mantenerla en perfecto estado.

de todas formas es facil mejorarla pues los ultimos km, estaban indecentes. era una pista de todoterreno (bueno ni eso) por que los agujeros eran enormes.............recuerdo algun adelantamiento este invierno a filas de 10 turismos, uufff.....

ya te informare el lunes.

bueno, ya estoy de vuelta de cerler y lo prometido es deuda. El sabado, expedicion a investigar las obras de la carretera del AMpriu.

Aunque 3 vallas cortan el acceso a la carretera, me fui con el Suzuki hasta eresue y desde allik tome la pista que te lleva al labert y desde este punto a la carretera del AMpriu. Empece a subir hacia las pistas y desde alli ya se veian bastantes camiones, escavadoras y demas maquinaria pesada. aparque en el camino del ardones y desde alli sali andando hasta las instalaciones de la estacion.

en la carretera han hecho un monton de desmontes a los lados, hay sitios en los sin exagerar, hay una amplitud de 10 metros. Han cambiado el trazado de casi todas las curvas mas cerradas de la parte plana (llegando al final). Luego cada 400 metros mas o menos, han hecho una zanjas donde meten unos grandes tubos de hormigon (supongo que para canalizar el agua).

luego, baje por la carretera, a dia de ayer habia obras hasta un par de kilometros antes del cuartel.

Parece que va a quedar casi una autopista, lo que permitira desconjestionar el acceso por el molino. La obra, me dijeron, la sufraga la diputacion general de aragon. lo dicho, solo me toco quitar una de las vallas del principio de la carretera y volver para casa.

resumiendo: parte del trazado nuevo y nuevo firme..........ojala se gastasen esta pasta en nuevas instalaciones, no? a ver si al año que viene..........
