Report
Considering the meagre snow cover and the number of days that have passed since we saw any fresh snow, the pistes are in surprisingly good condition. Recently I skied in Courchevel 1650 and found several runs in near-perfect condition. There are, however, some runs such as Suisse which are hard packed to the point of being ice. In the Meribel valley there are still 8 pistes which are closed though insufficient snow, but that leaves over 60 open. The biggest annoyance at the moment is the number of stones which are poking though the pistes and we do need some more snow to cover these up. Overall, though, we are doing okay. Meribel's continual investment in snow canons is paying off now - I will never again moan at the price of a lift pass.
For the second time in a week the French national weather service has forecast snow but none has fallen. The head of the local lift company (who is often more accurate than Meteo France) is predicting warmer and wetter weather from next Sunday. Let's hope he's right....
