Born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1936 Saudan grew up near the tiny village of Verbier where he skied to school during the winter. His working life started as a truck driver but his true vocation was skiing and the mountains. Coming from a poor family he didn’t have the money or contacts to compete on the professional ski circuit and became a ski instructor instead. In the early sixties he took off for a prototypical gap year which saw him working at Aspen in the USA, Mount Cook in New Zealand and finally, as the resident professional at Scotland’s Glen Shee.

Durante sus viajes, Saudan fue aficionándose más y más por la travesía y las pendientes vírgenes. Apodado como ‘el esquiador de lo imposible’, fue el primero que realizó un descenso directo en la Couloir Sans Nom, una ladera con 45º de inclinación en el Rothorn, en la primavera de 1967. Un mes después esquió la cara del norte del Corvatsch en St Moritz, alrededor de 1.000 metros de desnivel con un ángulo de 45º. Finalmente, el 23 de septiembre de 1967, Saudan se hizo un magnífico autorregalo de cumpleaños, el primer descenso del Couloir Spencer en Chamonix.
During his travels he was increasingly drawn towards the backcountry and descents of previously unskied slopes. Nicknamed "The Skier of the Impossible" he put up a first descent of the direct 45 degree line of the Couloir Sans Nom on the face of the Rothorn in the spring of 1967. A month later he skied the north face of the Corvatsch in St Moritz, around 1000 meters of vertical at over 45°. Finally on the 23rd of September 1967 Saudan gave himself a fantastic birthday present with the first descent of the Couloir Spencer in Chamonix.

Esto fue solo el comienzo. El año siguiente cayeron el Couloir Whymper en el Auguille Verte y el Couloir Gervasutti en el Mont-Blanc du Tacul. Sylvain cayó en la cuenta de que para esquiar por laderas con ángulos superiores a 50º, los giros normales en salto con los esquís paralelos no eran prácticos. En el momento de caída libre, el esquiador se aceleraba en exceso como para poder controlar la recepción, y a esas altitudes el cansancio era además considerable. En su lugar, Sylvain desarrolló la técnica de giro denominada “windscreen wiper” con la que el esquiador hace girar los extremos de los esquís. Con esta técnica esquió el couloir Marienelli en el Monte Rosa y la cara noroeste del Aiguille de Bionnassay en 1969.
This was just the start. The following year the Couloir Whymper on the Auguille Verte and the Couloir Gervasutti on the Mont-Blanc du Tacul fell. To ski at angles of more than 50 degrees Sylvain realised that normal parallel jump turns were not practical. In the period of 'free fall' the skier picks up too much speed to control his descent and at altitude they are too tiring. Instead Sylvain developed the 'windscreen wiper' turn where the skier turns on the ends of the skis. Armed with these skills Saudan skied the couloir Marienelli on the Monta Rosa and the North West face of the Aiguille de Bionnassay in 1969.

A principios de los 70 Saudan esquió el Mount Hood en Norteamérica, la cara suroeste del Eiger, la cara sur de Grandes Jorasses y el couloir del Tournette en la cara suroeste del Mont-Blanc. En 1982 Saudan descendió esquiando desde la cima del Gasherbrum-I en el Himalaya, situada a 8.068 metros de altitud.
In the early 1970s Saudan skied Mount Hood in North America, the south west face of the Eiger, the south face of the Grandes Jorasses and the couloir of the Tournette on the south west side of Mont-Blanc. In 1982 Saudan descended from the top of the 8068 meter Gasherbrum-I in the Himalayas.
