Ski pioneers in Cantabria
In 1929 brothers Manolo and Alfonso Yllera García-Logo took to Cantabria, a little province in the north of Spain, a pair of Finnish skis from the Barcelona International Exposition. At the same time, a group of brave cantabrians got fond of skiing on the south side of the Tajahierro Pass at Soto de Campoo. Beside brothers Yllera, those pioneers were Carlos Rasines, Manolo Abarca, Jesús Ródenas and Manuel Suárez-Inclán, together with some Germans from a company called Editorial Aldus. With the advice of Fernando Bustamante, who knew the area very well, they decided to spend their Easter holidays in Braña de Palombrera and stay at Venta del Sordo.
During these vacations, the group had to sleep in the upper floor of a stable with the only possible heating in those times, the heat of the animals that dozed underneath them and blankets to bundle up in the rickety old beds with mattresses of maize leaves. It was there, during one of the excursions, when it arose the idea of creating a ski and mountaineering club.
This first idea came together with a project, the reconstruction of an old ruinous cabin in Braña de Palombrera, so that it served as a refuge.
With this plan in mind, Fernando Bustamante began the proceedings to create the Tajahierro Alpine Club. The first assembly was held in the spring of 1931 in the premises of the "Bar el Suizo" in Santander, where Fernando Bustamante Quijano was appointed chairman of the club.
The club’s badge was created by Father Antonio Martín Lanuza, great sketcher and caricaturist.
With the club already formed, and seeing the difficulties for the adjustment of the cabin that they had previously chosen as a refuge, the club members decided to rent part of the Venta del Sordo. It also needed a good repair but even so it was more practicable and useful.
So in the summer of 1931 with the help of a bricklayer and a carpenter of Soto de Campoo, the holes of the walls were filled and the doors, floors and windows fitted. Also some bunks and mattresses were settled so that the club members could spend the night there.
Like in so many other places in those times, it was not easy to go to ski. It was rather a great adventure, because most times it was impossible to reach Venta del Sordo by car. The road was usually blocked by the formation of big heaps of snow like the one of "Monin", thus called after the nickname of a road labourer who was buried by one of those heaps. Therefore, it was necessary to go there on foot and loaded with everything that could be needed.
The Venta del Sordo refuge was used by club members until 1937. In those times, most Spanish clubs cancelled their sporting activities because of the Spanish Civil War.
Nowadays the club has about 800 members, amongst them José D. Torcida Marcó, who was chairman of the Cantabrian Ski Federation from 1967 to 1980. The club has currently a number of refuges and hostels for its members.
Special thanks to Club Tajahierro.
