Toni Sailer, has died on Monday 24 August 2009, He was 73 and according to the Kitzbueheler Ski Club, had been battling a long illness.
Toni Sailer ha sido, sin ninguna duda, uno de los mejores esquiadores de todos tiempos. Nacido el 17 de Noviembre de 1935 «das blitz von Kitz» (el relampago de Kitzbuhel, su tierra natal) empezó a despuntar en 1952, cuando, aun con 17 años, ganó algunas pruebas disputadas en Francia. En 1955 pasó a ser miembro del equipo austriaco de esquí alpino y, en 1956 llegó su momento de gloria.
No doubt Toni Sailer has been one of the best skiers of all times. Born on 17 th November 1935, 'Das Blitz von Kitz' (the lightning from Kitzbuhel, his native land) began to stand out in 1952. He was 17 years old when he won his first race in France.In 1955 he joined the Austrian alpine skiing team and in 1956 he reached his moment of glory.
Con tan solo 20 años, «Handsome Toni» (el guapo Toni) hizo historia en los Juegos Olimpicos de Cortina d´Ampezzo, al ganar las medallas de oro de las tres disciplinas del esqui alpino, el descenso, el slalom gigante y el slalom.
'Handsome Toni' was 20 when he entered the history of Olympics. It was in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He won three gold meals, one for each alpine skiing discipline: downhill, giant slalom and slalom.

His Olympic victories were absolutely exceptional since he won the giant slalom by 6 seconds, slalom by 4 seconds and downhill by 3,5 seconds, something never seen ever since in such high level competitions.
During the 1958 World Championship, in Bad Gastein ( Austria), Toni Sailer excelled again, this time picking up three gold medals (downhill, giant slalom and combinated) and a silver one. The only discipline in which he was not a winner was slalom.
After retiring from competition, Toni Sailer started a new career. He took advantage of being considered an icon of masculine beauty and became an actor and singer.
He took part in more than 20 films, recorded some other 20 LPs and even became a cartoon character.
In 1972 he was appointed trainer of the Austrian alpine skiing team. He held this post until 1976
