"When it comes to skiing in Europe, the Alps has long dominated the conversation, but there's more to Europe than fondue and rando racing. Today, I'm talking about a place where the tinto flows like wine, the crowds don't show up ’til noon, and the skiing ain't bad, either. I'm talking about a little place called Spain"

"...Ask someone to describe 'the perfect holiday' and you're bound to get a rambling, oft contradictory brain splurge.
Throw in the tricky subject of travelling as part of a couple or family, and the list of holiday hang-ups only multiply.
When you've got cultural city breaks, exotic beachside lazeabouts, soothing spa getaways, and snow-capped ski soirees all vying for your holiday brochure attention, it's hard to know where to start.
Which is where Granada comes in..."

The following text is a translation of BAQUEIRA BERET | February 2014, by u/McRobi!.

BAQUEIRA BERET | February 2014

Baqueira Beret, with its 120km in runs and nearly 2k ha. of ski area, is the largest ski resort in Spain and, considered by many, the best resort in the country and one of the top resorts in Europe.

If this wasn´t enough, it is located in the gorgeous Val d'Aran, one of the most beautiful places in the Pyrenees, where alpine landscapes and traditional architecture grant the villages here a particular charm, wether it´s summer or winter.

This year I was fortunate enough to get to know the ski resort as well as other areas of the valley, even though my pictures and comments do not make it justice - this is my story:

BAQUEIRA BERET / VAL D'ARAN

Day 1: Sunday

The worst part of travelling to the Pyrenees for us is that it takes several hours to drive. From Ponferrada (West of Spain) to Garòs - the village where we stayed in the valley, there is around 800km. We had to get up very early, leaving Ponferrada at 7am and arriving 10 hours later.

Once in the valley, we first checked in the lodging and left our gear there, and then drove down to Viella (Vielha e Mijaran, in aranese, the local language), which is the largest village in the valley, to meet with the rest of our group: Paula, Rubèn, Ana and Adri. We bought our lift passes and went for a couple of beers and pinchos (little skewers of varied content) to get up to speed with each other´s lifes and discuss what we were doing the following day. I liked the ambient in Viella, we had multiple options of pinchos to choose from at the bar, similar to the Vasque Country ones, but much more affordable.

This day we could not do much more because we were tired from the drive and we were all keen to get up early the next morning...

Dusina House, Garòs

Day 2: Monday

The day finally came! After several months looking at pictures and reading all the literature about the resort, even chechink the weather reports even though we were nowhere close to it, we finally were in Baqueira Beret! I had been really looking forward to it.

We left Garós with plenty of time to get to the base of the resort because we were not sure how long would it take and I had booked a skiing course so I had to be there by 9:30.

Garós is about 7km far from the base of the resort and it barely took 15 minutes to get there. We parked on the free lot at the entrance and grabbed the train that dropped us by the very base of the resort. All together this took 45 minutes approximately.

Passes

While most of the resorts are already using magnetic cards, Baqueira has maintained the traditional card that you hang from your jacket - maybe this is an identity trademark they want to keep in a vintage fashion?

As I was doing my ski course, I bid farewell to my friends and girldfriend and joined the selection process, where I landed level D - skiers that can do advanced turns and are ready to start edging to achieve better grip to red slopes or with moderate to high inclination.

After looking around a lot, I booked my lessons with Era Escóla... this first day was an absolute disaster because the group was too large. While the school says there is a max of 8 students per class, we were 13, and all different levels, so we were doing frequent stops to wait for all members of the group to come together. Also the instructor was doing difficult red and black runs that not everyone was able for. Nobody was happy with the arrangement, even the instructor.

After these 3 hours of lessons, which I enjoyed getting to know the resort but did not actually get to learn much, I joined my friends to keep touring around.
This day was spectacular as shown in these last two pictures from the viewpoint, at 2,445 m of altitude, where you can see several well known peaks such as Aneto (3.404 m).

As the day was panning out great we skied non stop until almost 4pm, when we had a snack at the Baqueira 1.800 coffee shop. There we enjoyed the sunny weather and had a beer - which cost €2.85.

We were skiing for just over 7 hours until they closed the lifts. No doubt we took full advantage of our first day. This day we only skiied in Baqueira, one of the three main areas in the resort (Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua). However we would have plenty of time in the comin days to get to know these other areas.
At night, after a well deserved rest at the Garós house, we went down to Viella again to do some tourism... which started as strictly cultural and slowly progressed to only gastronomical.

Our first day in Baqueria was to dream for! Amazing snow, excellent weather and the best comapny. What else ca you ask for??
Day 3: Tuesday

As well as the previous day, Tuesday morning was bright and clear, as forecasts predicted another awesome day. As I was getting some lessons again today we also had to get up early to get to the resort first thing.

I have to say I found them quite difficult, but the thought of sliding down those dreamy empty slopes under the tame dusk light, really made up for the early rises.

New people joined the course this day, so they made new level tests. I stayed with the same teacher and some of the people that was in my group the previous day, as well as some new people. The overall level of the group was much more similar, but there was still too many students, 11.
Even though it was still a large group, at the end of the day I had a better experience during the lessons than the previous day: lessons had been more technical and the ski level of the people in the group was more alike, so I really enjoyed the skiing - I think we all did, unlike the previous day. In fact, after the lessons when the teacher suggested doing a couple of extra laps, I didn´t think twice. I would like to thank the teacher, Paco Castellarnau for being such a passionate instructor and knowing how to share this pasion with all of us.
After a quick beer at the Cafetería 2.200 hut I got to know some parts of the resort that I wouldn´t have been able too had I been skiing on my own. Paco, our instructor stayed with us for a couple of extra runs. We did tree runs while he kept giving us pointers and suggestions to improve our technique. I enjoyed this extra time with him and the rest of the group: Aran, Segun, Sergio, y Luis, which I´d like to send a greeting. We had such a good time we did not want to stop and I didn´t get to eat until 5pm.

Every day I was feeling more confident during my lessons, I was enjoying skiing while learning (in spite of the first day being a let down). It was definitely a good idea to sign up for the course. I would have liked to spend mopre time in the Bonaigua area because from what I could see from the chairlifts it seemed like a more unspoilt area, more isolated from the actual resort, with more terrain than slopes. It would offer lots of possibilities on a powder day.

It started snowing while we were having lunch in Bonaigua 2,072, clouds closed up and there was zero visibility. We skied back to Baqueira in a white out, following the slope side markings and using the maps often, trying not to get too delayed in case conditions got even worse.

Garòs

As we got back earlier, we enjoyed the last hours of light to get to know Garós, the village where we were staying. Valle de Aran is well know for its well taken care of villages and mountains - each street in Garós was a photo-op, with the stone houses and alpine roofs. This night we also stayed in the village. There is not a hughe amount of night life but there is enough to go out for a bite while enjoying the warmth of a fireplace.

Day 5: Thursday

When you spend a week in the Pyrenees in February it is difficult not to get a bad day. For us Thursday and Friday were not great with awful conditions: cold, windy and snowy....

Baqueira area, from Stadium run

Due to bad conditions we took our lessons in the lower part of the resort, where visibility was better. Also this day we had a race organised by the resort for all the people attending the ski courses. At first I didn´t like the idea very much because instead of skiing we wasted a lot of time, first waiting for our turn to take part in the race and then descending one by one. On the other hand it was a good experience to ski downhill from flag to flag feeling like a professional skier. It was a pity the day wasn´t better because we were "only" 8 attending the course and we were skiing much better as a team.

As my friends were hanging around Baqueira I decided to stay with the group after the lessons, enjoying and suffering skiing... even though the conditions were not good we kept going.

But just as we were taking off our skis, there was an opening in the sky so we hurried back up. We spent another hour up the hill, where we enjoyed some of the best runs of the week, with very few people on the slopes and great powder snow. Even though the day was not 100% good, we didn´t leave the resort until they were closing the lifts...

This night we went back to Viella, we enjoyed a few beers as we realised our ski week was coming to an end, and we only had one day left...

Day 6: Friday
Baqueira area, from Baqueira Bar

After the lessons I met my friends and decided to use the last day´s forfait until lunch time. Our last day´s skiing was limited to a few descents among the trees on the lower elevations and a good few beers in the bar to try and make the best out of the bad weather...

Baqueira 1.500

And so ended a good week of skiing. A few years ago I wouldn´t have even thought about coming to this resort which I associated with posers, rich and too cool for school people. This is nowhere near reality! Without a doubt I would love to come back here, I did not get to do many things such as the well known Escornacrabes, off piste descent. Who knows it might be the excuse to come back next year!

Garòs

This night we had over 15cm of snowfall so we could not move from Garós. We decided to go out and play with the snow, as if we hadn´t seen it enough during the week!

Day 7: Saturday

On Saturday we decided to do some tourism in the valley, looking as we would be tired from the week´s skiing and the resort would be much busier on the weekend. We went to the lower part of the valley near the French border - we went to villages like Bossóst, Les, Bausen or Canejan.

Canejan

In the morning we went to Bausen and Canejan, two small and quaint mountain villages that have amazing views. In the summer, I imagine, there would be lots of trekking routes starting from here.

Er Occitan restaurant, Bossòst (image taken from their website)

We went to Er Occitan, in Bossòst, for lunch, as it had been recommended as the best restaurant in the whole valley. I´m not sure about all the hype but indeed it must be among the best, staff, quality and presentation were impeccable.

Hot springs at Baronía de Les

Hot springs at Baronía de Les (image taken from the hot springs´website)

After a short walk around Bossòst, we went to Lest where we ended our vacation in the best possible way with a session at Baronía de Les hot springs. Each first Saturday of every month they organise a chill out evening, they lower the intensity of the lights, decorate the place with candles, have finger food while a DJ plays live music... al this while we wedre relaxing in the hot springs! It was amazing.

Day 8: Sunday

We sadly left Garòs, Baqueira Beret and Val d'Aran for home, knowing our holidays were over and already looking forward to our next ski trip to the Dolomites.

Donostia/San Sebastián, panoramic view of the beach Playa de la Concha

We went back home to Ponferrada following a motorway that runs parallel to the Pyrinees on the French side of the border, we decided to stop in San Sebastián. This is one of those places where it is always a good idea to make a pit stop.
___

It was a spectacular week with variable weather, were we enjoyed the slopes in Baqueira as much as the atmosphere of the villages in the valley and the company. Without a doubt coming to Baqueira was a good choice.

Discovering Formigal – Christmas 2012

As some of you may know I live in Ciudad Real and the closest ski resort to us is Sierra Nevada. For that reason my family and I have always spent Christmas there.

This year, due to lack of snow, we decided to change location, even if it meant doing a bunch of extra kilometres. Formigal looked like one of the resorts with the best snow conditions for the Christmas period so we decided to go there.

With this report I will try to explain our experience during the trip and help others who may be planning a trip to Formigal, at the same time as giving a heads up on the snow conditions in the resort. Here we go :)

It all started on the 22nd of December at 3:00 AM, ahead of us a 671km road trip and around 7 hours drive:

It may seem like a long trip at first but it went by quite fast thanks to the fact that most of us were sleeping for most of it xD the driver cannot say the same thing :diable:

These are some pictures taken while driving through Guadalajara, I was awake on this stretch :lol2:

At 7AM we got to Soria. Passing by Medinaceli...

Right before getting to Zaragoza, at about 8:45, we got a shot of the Moncayo

After driving past Aragon's capital city, on the way to Huesca along the A-23:

Getting close to Guara Range and Monrepos Pass:

At the pass:

Once over the pass we started descending towards Sabiñanigo, and drooling with the views of Aragon´s Pyenees:

The white delicacy is getting closer :bananaski:

Búbal-Saqués-Escarrilla … c'mon, we´re almost there:

Snow is starting to appear on both sides of the road:

Something appears over there hehehe

WE GOT THERE! All right, time to look for our hotel :lol2:

Once we located it we headed to Sextas to get our mountain passes and drive around the valleys in the resort:

On the way to Portalet we noticed the big difference in the amount of snow between Sextas and the border; now we understand why Aramón did not install webcams in Sextas! :za!ar:

We were in French land for a bit, just fooling around LOL :diable:

After that we went back to the hotel because the next day we would need all our energy to get familiar with all the areas in the resort. During the trip back to the hotel we took some more pictures that show the lack of snow in the Sextas area...

Dinner and straight to bed, tomorrow will begin the enticing part of this trip...

December 23rd, firt day of ski:

The morning sun from our hotel window:

We had breakfast and left for the slopes:

Down by the slopes in Sextas it was not cold at all, around 6ºC at 9:30

We begin our tour around the resort, up the Sallent lift and down the River as a warm up. Then on to Izas-Sarrios valley:

Escarra and Huegas T-bars:

High area at Izas looked epic:

We did a few runs on the blue slopes at Sarrios and then towards Anayet through the gap

Getting in the valley:

We went by Midi and got to the valley bottom:

We continued towards France - grabbed the Garmet chairlift, went down Batallero, and back up the same chair to get back to Anayet.

Between Anayet and Portalet :)

Straight away we went down La Glera and then up Anayet chair lift to get back to Izas-Sarrios.

This is the turn off to Courloir Mirador which gives you goose bumps - what on earth is there behind that? :oh!:

We ended the day going back to the parking lot down the Río run:

And that was the end of the day - our objective accomplished, to go from Sextas to Portalet and get familiar with the resort. Tomorrow, during the lessons, we will get to know all the hidden corners of this mountains.

This is a map with all the runs we did today:

December 24th, today is when the fun starts, we have ski lessons from 10am to 1pm, ripping it up all over the resort as well as improving our technique.

At 9am we were already in Sextas warming up before start suffering this resort, hahaha

At 10 we started with the shenanighans by riding up the Sallent to head towards Sarrios, and then from there on to Anayet. Up the Garmet and down the Corona run to get to Portalet and ride the Espelunciecha lift.

First hadcore descent, Corvas, turned my legs into jelly.

Retuning to Anayet, and from there on to Sarrios, to do a few lines down the red slopes by the Huegas Tbar.

And we finished the day with a couple of runs in the Tres Hombres area

To sum up the day:

We had lunch in Sextas with the family and then did a few more runs in the afternoon in Izas-Sarrios and Tres Hombres-Sextas valleys.

Pictures from Cantal:
December 25th turns out to be grey and overcast, but this does not stop us from enjoying ourselves:

As the previous day, we did some warm ups before the lessons tarted:

We headed up at 10:05, today we will ski around Tres Hombres:

We go down El Río to grab Tramacastilla Tbar, I have to say I absolutely loved the views around here

Run down Descenso and Tres Hombres and up Crestas chair lift.

We wanted to sneak in El Bosque run but it was closed. However the Couloir Tosquera wasn´t so we headed there. :bananaski:

We got to the bottom of Crestas chair lift and again went up, this time to gown Stadium slope all the way from top to bottom - yesterday we only did a section and we were keen to do the whole thing haha. This is a great run, which we linked with Descenso to get to Sextas.

Then we hopped on Sallent and Collado chairs and we got in towards Anayet going down Midi, La Carbonera and Mina.

All this time it was spitting rain under 1,700m, at times turning to stronger rain but nothing too bad. At higher altitudes, over 1,800 to 1,900m there was a light snowfall that wasn´t sticking but was enought to cover your goggles with snow.

After Anayet we returned to Sarrios by the Collado, visibility was still good here, hiwever in the higher part of Tres Hombres the clouds were truly closing up.

There was not much left to do so we did a few runs around Tres Hombres and put an end to the day. Let´s not forget that this is the only resort in Spain that closes at 2pm on Christmas day.

This shows the runs we did today:

In Cantal we got our picture taken by a photographer from the ski school. I would like to send my greetings from here :) :+: You are great guys!

In Sextas we returned our lift pass to get back our fee and then headed home - even though the fee is only 3€ there is no reason to give them to Aramon, is there?.

On the way back to Jaca:

On the route back home through Pamplona we decided to stay at a rural hotel located in Aizpún, a village only 30km from Pamplona, to tak a break, enjoy the views and relax. We stayed here from the 25th till the 27th:

Val de Goñi is the valley where the village is located:

There was snow! :oh!::oh!::oh!:

The following day we drove to Ciudad Real, about 650km far from Pamplona - we went for a stroll along some of the most remarkable streets in the city such as Estafeta, Mañueta and the city council´s square:

Castillo square:

And of course, we visited Reyno de Navarra to get some CA Osasuna merchandise :chine:

After this last stop we drove all the way to Ciudad Real :crying:

These pics were taken arriving to my home land, there is no mountains around here...

All in all this was an excellent trip with the family. If I had to give Formigal a grade, from my point if view as somebody who has never been to the Pyrenees before, I would give it a 9: access to the resort is good, great snow conditions, amazing runs... I will for sure come back :+:

On a negative note some of the lifts were a bit slow and snow was a bit lacking in some sectors at lower altitudes, but everything else forementioned made up for this.

And that´s all folks, thank you for reading this brick wall, I hope you enjoyed :)

We have translated an inspiring reportage from our Canary Snow Team friends. It tackles about the unusual experience of skiing above 3000 meters in the 28th parallel north (even southernmost than the Atlas Mountains in Morocco). A subtropical paradise where legend has it there existed the mythic Teide ski resort.

Here you are, I hope you like it :+:

Sent from the Canary Islands in order to show the most unknown aspects of our volcanoes, and with no aim to create any polemic. We conducted a descent down the North Face of the highest mountain in the Spanish territory; in particular, the route along the corridor called the “Y” (in Spanish, "The Greek Y" )

Advised by past experiences and given the characteristics of the volcanic terrain, we used our FreeTrek Ventura Rossignol with sealskins and ski crampons, as well as the ice axes and regular crampons essential in this terrain.

We came across all kinds of snow, mainly wind packed and hard ones.

With this report we want to show some of the conditions and hazards one can find in our volcanoes ... We consider ourselves Mother Nature lovers and ski mountaineering enthusiasts in these latitudes. We are aware of many follies sometimes are made here, so we would like these photos to show, whosoever gets here, where they venture

Yes; you can ski in Spain (64 replies)

Far from the cliché of beaches and summer tourism, there are almost forty ski resorts in Spain and a culture of mountain sports about a century old. And yes, the clichés also apply to ski tourism in Spain. The extraordinary gastronomy, the wines, the weather and the fiesta coexist with the other faces of the Spanish idiosyncrasy. Take it or leave it; although most of you will probably end loving it.

The most visited is the sunny Sierra Nevada. It is incredibly just one hour drive to the warm beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, but with a consistent five-month season and more than a hundred kilometres of groomed tracks in its 1.200 meters vertical drop. A thousand kilometres to the north are the Pyrenees, where you can find plenty of great-little-gem ski resorts and the other five most popular, like the well-endowed Formigal, the charismatic and posh Baqueira-Beret, the fetching Cerler and the doyenne Candanchú, home along with La Molina, to the first Spanish ski clubs and school.

As you may know, in Spain things, uses, mores and landscapes change dramatically every hundred kilometers. Therefore, skiing here you will find an incredible variety of traditions, food, drinks and tastes along with a great diversity of art forms, among which is especially remarkable the Romanesque style in the Catalan Pyrenees or the Arabic architecture in Andalusia. It is more of a comprehensive playful experience what you can get from your ski trip to Spain.

And yes, you can ski real snow. Spain is considered the second most mountainous country in Europe, and the ski-resort base is placed in average at 1,500 meters over the sea level. It is not maybe Utah powder but it is usually found the same quality of snow you can enjoy in France, Italy or Austria. As we said early, abundant snow in an experienced and well-greased ski industry, with such a huge variety of cultural attractions that, with a little time and effort to polish up some minor lacks, would be the envy of any ski resort in the Alps (and indeed it is for many who already know the potential of our mountains).
