Los orígenes de la estación de Snowbasin se remontan a 1938 cuando algunos empleados de los servicios forestales entre ellos Alf Engen empezaron a frecuentar la zona para esquiar. En 1939 se tienen ya noticias del primer remonte y en 1940 dada la gran popularidad que alcanzo el lugar Engen y los forestales debieron constituir un grupo que velase por el lugar, y ese mismo año se celebra la primera competición con 75 participantes.

In 1938, ski pioneer and Forest Service recreation advisor Alf Engen and several other Forest Service employees hiked into Wheeler Basin and determined that it was an excellent location for a ski area.
Snow Basin's first ski tow was in operation by 1939. As word of Snow Basin's pristine powder spread, the area began attracting more and more visitors. In 1940, Engen and the Forest Service supervised a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crew in building an access road to the resort. Snow Basin hosted its first ski race in December 1940, attracting 75 racers.



La meteórica proyección de la nueva estación la lleva en 1941 a construir el primer telesilla, construcción que se vio truncada por la II Guerra Mundial ya que se cerró la estación en ese periodo, en 1946 se reabre ya con el telesilla en funcionamiento. En 1960 se construye el primer alojamiento y un nuevo telesilla, pero la gran expansión le llega en 1979 y los primeros años 80, cuando los nuevos propietarios cambian el nombre de la estacion por el de "Snowbasin", se amplia el dominio esquiable y se construye el nuevo Telesilla triple.

Construction of the mile-long Wildcat chairlift began in 1941, but was halted with the advent of World War II. The Forest Service closed the ski area for the duration of the war and reopened it in 1945. The Wildcat chairlift was completed and dedicated in 1946.
In the early 1960s, the Glendale Inn Lodge was constructed on the site of the original Forest Service shelter, the Porcupine chairlift replaced a ropetow and the Wildcat double chair lift was completed.hrough the 1970s and early 1980s, Snow Basin changed ownership several times, and new owners changed the official name of the resort to "Snowbasin" in 1978. Snowbasin was significantly improved in 1979 with the construction of the Middle Bowl triple chairlift and a 2,700 square-foot expansion of the day lodge.
