La historia de este club, es como poco, una historia peculiar en sí misma. Es la historia de una pasión por la nieve y por el esquí, una pasión que logro devolver la ilusión y la esperanza de vivir a los hombres que fundaron el “Changi A.I.F. Ski Club”.
This is a club with a very peculiar history. It is a story of passion for snow and ski, a passion which made its founders get back their illusion and strength for living. It is the story of the "Changi A.I.F. Ski Club".
Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, muchos soldados australianos pertenecientes a la Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) fueron hechos prisioneros de guerra (P.O.W) por las tropas japonesas y llevados al campo de concentración de “Changi” en Singapur. Entre otros trabajos, estos POW fueron los encargados de construir bajo condiciones infrahumanas el trazado del tren "Thai-Burma", construcción en la que se basó la famosa película “El puente sobre el río Kwai”.
During World War II, a lot of Australian soldiers from the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) were made prisoners of war (P.O.W.) by the Japanese army and moved to the Changi concentration camp in Singapore. Among other things, these POWs were forced to build the "Thai-Burma railway" in subhuman conditions. This story later became the screenplay of a very popular film, "The Bridge on the River Kwai" .
Entre esos prisioneros estaba el Capitán de la A.I.F. Tom Mitchell. Este australiano era miembro del Kandahar Ski Club, fundador de la Federación Nacional Australiana de esquí en 1932, y capitán del equipo australiano de esquí en los campeonatos del mundo de 1931, 1933 y 1934. También publicó el primer libro que se editó en Australia sobre la técnica del esquí titulado “Ski Heil”.
One of those prisoners was A.I.F. Captain Tom Mitchell, an Australian who was a member of the Kandahar Ski Club, founder of the Australian Ski Federation in 1932, captain of the Australian ski team during the World Championships in 1931, 1933 and 1934. He also published a book in Australia about ski-ing technique under the title “Ski Heil”.
Y fue en el periodo en que Tom Mitchell (1942-1945) fue prisionero en Singapur, cuando junto a otros esquiadores australianos en una de sus charlas rememorando su pasión por el esquí, Tom y sus compañeros de prisión deciden que ese grupo debe tener un nombre y así lo plasman en una pequeña hoja de papel. Se fundaba de esta manera el “Changi A.I.F. Ski Club”.
During the time when Tom Mitchel (1942-1945) was prisoner in Singapore there were also more Australian skiers in the camp. In one of their conversations about their passion for skiing, Tom and his mates decided that this group should have a name and so they wrote it in a piece of paper. Thus the"Changi A.I.F. Ski Club" was founded.
Este documento fue guardado y depositado personalmente por Tom Mitchell, al finalizar la guerra y ser liberado, en los Archivos del Ski Club of Great Britain , donde aún se conserva.
When the war ended and Tom Mitchell was released, he took that document to the Ski Club of Great Britain archives, and it is still there.

Este documento es, según palabras de Sir Arnold Lunn, un tributo a la determinación y a la magia que produce el esquí en el modo de vida de aquellos que aman este deporte, y demuestra que aun en las peores condiciones físicas y mentales el esquí ayudó a aquellos soldados a tener una moral y un espíritu que su cautividad no pudo destruir. Es un caso único en los anales de la historia del esquí.
As Sir Arnold Lunn put it, that document is a tribute to the determination and magic that ski causes in the lifes of those who love this sport. It shows that even in the worst physical and mental conditions, ski helped those soldiers to keep their spirits high and overcome their situation. This is a unique case in the story of skiing.

No se si era pasión o desesperación, pero a veces el ser humano saca cosas de si mismo que no haría en otras circunstancias.
